Jesus Comes Just For You
Mark 5:1-2
‘’They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.’
On reaching Gerasenes, a demon possessed man came to welcome Jesus.
In those days tombs were not as we know them to be now. Tombs were caves that were cut out from rocks and bodies were placed inside the cave. This man used to live in the tombs with the bodies.
Mark 5:3-4
‘This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.’
People tried to chain him down but all in vain. He was stronger than everyone in that area.
Mark 5:5
‘Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.’
At times he would break free from the chains holding him down and run to the hills.
Mark 5:6-8
‘When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”’
The moment he saw Jesus getting off the boat he ran towards him shouting and fell on his knees.
No one had previously introduced Jesus to him. He was not mentally stable. But he still knew Jesus. How? The evil spirit inside him knew. Men might not recognize Jesus but evil spirits know and fear his presence.
In the presence of God, demons will manifest.
Jesus commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Likewise, when you command an evil spirit to leave a person, you need to do it in the name of Jesus.
Mark 5:9-10
‘Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.’
There were around 6000 spirits to make a legion.
Mark 5:11-13
‘A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.’
They begged Jesus to send them to the herd of pigs. Jesus allowed them to go into the pigs and they rushed down into the lake, drowned and died.
Unclean spirits can live in humans and pigs. Around two thousand pigs died that day. What does that mean? The unclean spirit inside this man was the spirit of death.
How do we recognize what kind of spirit is inside, hurting a person? Certain unclean spirits lead a person to unhealthy habits and addictions. In truth, behind most addictions there will be an unclean spirit.
For instance, if a person continuously lies about everything then it's an evil spirit inside that person. And if this spirit is cast out, then he will stop lying and live an honest life.
Similarly when the unclean spirit leaves an addict, he will be able to live a better life.
Mark 5:14 -15
‘Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.’
People in the neighbouring towns heard about this and came to the place where all these things were reported. Usually when people travelled they would avoid this route in fear of the demon possessed man. But now everyone was rushing to see him.
Once a Pastor while reading this scripture portion he came across verse 15 and shared his thoughts with those around him. In verse 15 we see this demon possessed man dressed and in his right mind. Where did he get a new set of clothes to dress himself? Maybe Jesus, before getting on the boat to Gerasene asked his disciples to take a spare set of clothes with them.
What does this show? Jesus came prepared!
Mark 5:16-17
‘’Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.’
On witnessing this miracle, the people pleaded with Jesus to leave their region. They valued their pigs more. This is the reality that we face even now. Yes, we need to protect our environment and natural resources for the next generations. But the life of a person is much more valuable.
Mark 5:18-20
‘’As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
The man now wanted to go with Jesus on his journey. But Jesus had better plans for him. Jesus wanted the man to go and speak about the Word.
Summary
Jesus is going to turn your life around. He’s going to pick you up from the miry clay and put your feet on a firm rock. Whatever you may be facing today, the challenges that lay ahead might be disheartening but remember, you have a Saviour and he always comes prepared.
