God Will take You Out Of Any Pit
Only when there is expectancy in the heart will there be hope for renewal. When we were discussing the story of Joseph, as we progressed through time, we realised that when Jacob heard that his son Benjamin was also taken away from him, he was in despair and hopeless. But God, the Holy Spirit can lift you up from the depths of despair.
Isaiah 59: 1-3
‘Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you so that he will not hear. For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt.’
In the Book of Isaiah, it is written that God’s arms are long to rescue us from a deep pit and He is not deaf to hear our desperate calls. It also says that heaven is God’s throne and Earth his footstool. It is common for Kings to use a footstool as they rest, and often made out of gold. Hence, God’s hands and feet are long enough to lift you from any depths of the world.
Psalm 40:1-3
‘I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.’
Waiting patiently means waiting for God’s time, answer, his promises to be fulfilled etc without grumbling. God hears our cry and acts on it. He is a God of action.
If someone falls into a pit, they cannot make a phone call for help but can only scream and cry for help. We can only imagine what Joseph must have gone through. We can imagine Joseph screaming out his brother’s name for help to get him out of the pit. Even though his brothers did not pay heed to Joseph’s cries, our Lord did, and perhaps that is why, while Joseph was kicking and screaming, miraculously the slave traders passed by, which essentially was the beginning of Joseph’s great future.
Unlike the politicians of our time, our God is a doer of things. He does not merely promise us the heavens and the Earth but delivers us from our pitiful depths and restores our soul.
Often when we are in a conundrum or a difficult predicament, the people that we believe will support us or will help us through the situation might not always come through. Instead, it could be someone that you may not know all that well that comes to your rescue. Our God works in ways that are beyond our understanding but know that he will always come through for you. Once he lifts you from your slimy pits, he will place you in a firm place. In the Bible, rock is a metaphor for God as he is a God of all ages, which means that many people in their lifetime did not wither away because they had firmly established themselves on this rock. This rock will not dupe, fool, or cheat on you. God, our rock is unchanging and constant. Once he places you on the rock, he will give you a new song in your mouth. A new song is likened to a new beginning or a new miracle/way in your life.
During the time of David, there was a lot of music and praise. He was one of the Kings of Israel who gave much importance to praise and worship, and he had several music directors at his court. Perhaps, we can assume that David wrote these lines in Psalm 40 as he was going through a difficult time. We can assume that he was in a grave issue that could not be solved by his family or his ministers, and these lines were a result of the incident at hand and was David’s way of crying for help to the Lord.
Believe that even if the people around you do not come to your rescue, know that OUR GOD will lift you up and stabilise your life while letting you experience new beginnings in your life.
Jude 24 To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—
Praise God and worship Him even if you are in the pit, and praise the God who has delivered you from your pits. If God has restored your life, praise the Lord, and that is a testimony to the Lord. Many people will look at your life as a testimony and come to the Lord, witnessing the sheer joy in your heart and the gratefulness you bear.
God can lift you from any depth, he has a heart of gold, ears, and long hands and feet to help you out of your trouble.
