There are wrong ways and right ways of treating the Holy Spirit. We are first discussing the wrong ways.
Acts 7:51 – You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!
This is a verse from the preaching of Stephen, the first martyr of Christian church. He was powerfully preaching and he is narrating the history of the people of Israel. The Bible clearly tells that Stephen was full of the Holy Spirit; and whatever he spoke was from the Holy Spirit. They were unyielding just as how stiff-necked people cannot bend their neck. Circumcision in the New Testament is repentance. These people just like their ancestors did not surrender to God’s will, had no repentance at all; always resisted the Holy Spirit. Stephen was only a spokesman, it was indeed the Holy Spirit who was speaking through him.The accusation of the Holy Spirit is that they were resisting the Holy Spirit. Generation after generation, the people of Israel resisted the Holy Spirit and the above verse is an expression of the sorrow of the Holy Spirit. Many centuries of accumulated sorrow of the Holy Spirit is now ventilated through Stephen.
Galatians 5:16,17 – So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
The works of the flesh are against the works of the Spirit. If you are continuing with the work of the flesh, you are opposing the works of the Spirit. It is a wrong way of treating the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells inside every New Testament believer; He is resident in us. The Holy Spirit wants to work in us and to produce His works through us. But if we do not give Him a chance by always continuing the work of the flesh, that will be a great offense to Him. Never keep on doing the work of the flesh.
Ephesians 4:30 – And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
This wrong way of treating the Holy Spirit is very common among churches and believers. Knowingly or unknowingly we grieve the Holy Spirit. As said earlier, the Holy Spirit is very sensitive like a dove. He can be easily hurt if you don’t communicate with Him for a long time. If you continue sinning, He can be hurt. If you don’t listen to His voice, He can be grieved.
Hebrews 10:29 – How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
Many people think that once you are saved, you are saved forever. It is absolutely correct, but at the same time there are many chances for you to lose salvation. God will never take back the salvation but you can lose it.
We usually quench fire. Quenching the Spirit means quenching the fire of the Holy Spirit. This is also a common mistake done by churches and believers around the globe. Other people can quench the passion and zeal of the Holy Spirit that one has, through different mistreatments.
This is the superlative degree of wrong handling the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 12:31 – And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
Never blaspheme the Holy Spirit. If you grieve the Holy Spirit, there are chances for you to repent and come back. If you quench the fire of the Holy Spirit, there are chances for you to rekindle it again. But if you ever blaspheme against the Holy Spirit, you have no chance for redemption anymore. Many youngsters have texted me worrying if they have committed the mistake of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. Let me clarify it here as well: If you worry whether you have committed this sin or not, you have not! If you’ve really blasphemed against the Holy Spirit, you can never repent at all; because you have hardened your heart to a point where there will be no chance for you to repent. So don’t worry about that.
So, these are the 10 ways of how one can mistreat the Holy Spirit. We’ll study on how to treat the Holy Spirit in the right way in the upcoming episodes.
