Why is Jesus called the “Son of God”?

29 April, 2021

According to the Bible seven categories of people are called sons of God.

  • Angels
  • All human beings in general
  • Nation of Israel
  • David and his descendants
  • New testament believers
  • Those who show God’s nature are called sons Of God.
  • After resurrection God’s people will be called Sons Of God.

If God has  seven categories of sons and daughters, why is Jesus called the only begotten son?

The Bible says Jesus is the only begotten son, one of a kind , a unique son of God. He is quite different from all other sons of God. Jesus had the title Son of God even in the Old Testament and not  when he was born on earth. Jesus never acquired the title ‘son’ because of his human incarnation. He was always the Son of God and at his human birth, the Son Of God became the Son of Man. Jesus is the pre existent  Son of God and He came for us a Son of man. By this title, it does not mean that God the Father created the Son of God.

As we explore why Jesus is called the Son of Man, we understand that there are many reasons.

1. His role in the Trinity

Many people do not believe in ‘Trinity’ as this term is not seen in the  Bible. Although there is no such word in the Bible, it is a fact or truth that is revealed in the Bible. We normally use this term to bring out what is contained or meant by this term. The only true God is ‘three persons working together’. There is only one God but people get confused because they  think in physical terms. Spirits can exist together! We see this in Luke 8.26-39 in the man in Gerasenes. A ‘legion’ which means 6000 in number of demon spirits existed in one man. The omnipresent God in three persons live together in eternity in the Spirit world and not the physical world.

God of the Bible is only one but in one God there are three expressions or personalities. In this Trinity, all three people have different roles. The first person takes the role of a Father.

The second person takes the role of the Son. And that is why he is the Eternal Son to the Eternal Father. If the fatherhood of the first person is eternal, the sonship of the second person is also eternal. By the word ‘son’, it does not mean he is born or  created or came into existence  but the title is given to the role he is playing.

2. His relationship to the father.

As the Son of God, Jesus exemplifies a perfect relationship to the father. This shows the relationship between the first person of the Trinity and second person of the Trinity. This is a Father- Son relationship which is a perfect relationship. There is absolutely no disagreement or conflict between the heavenly father and son unlike human families.

3. He does the will and work of the father.

This means Jesus always does the will of the father. The son of God exists to execute the will of the father. Normally all sons are submitted to their fathers and whatever the father asks, is done by the son. Similarly, Jesus did whatever His father wanted, desired him to do and so was called the ‘Son Of God’. While on earth,Jesus clearly declared that his purpose on earth was to do the will of the Father. He does the work of the Father.

In the Olden times, usually all the sons took up the profession of their fathers. It could be the family trade or profession. For example, all the sons of Farmers did farming, the sons of Shepherds became Shepherds. In the same way, Jesus took up the profession/ work of his father. Whatever the father did, Jesus did and so was called the Son.  Just like the father raises the dead the son also raises the Dead. Another example is the final judgement. Actually, God the father has the authority to do the final judgement, but He has given it to the Son. God the Father has  the capacity to forgive sins and Jesus has the same authority. Jesus does only the works that the Father does.

Matthew 11:27 All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

4.He is the chosen vessel

The sonship of Jesus also shows that he is chosen for some particular assignment. The term ‘Son’ is often used to designate a chosen vessel for important tasks. God, the Father chose the Son, the second person in the Trinity  to entrust Him to do things that no one else in the universe can do.

Accordingly, he is also known as the Messiah, the Anointed One.

1 Peter 2:4-7 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says:“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”

5.He is the image Of the Invisible God

A son normally looks similar to His Father. We can picture the Father when we see the son. In the same way, the Bible says, the Son carries the nature of God. He is the divine essence of the Father. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature.

6.He is God Himself

Another very important reason why Jesus is called the Son Of God is because He was God Himself. When Jesus revealed that he was God himself,  the pharisees got angry and tried to stone him. They accused him of making himself equal with God.

Do you now understand why Jesus is called the Son of God? He is different from all the seven categories of sonship. There is nobody equal to him, he is one of a kind. He is unique! He is the one and only begotten son as there none other like him.
