What Jesus Did For Me Hebrews Chapter 2: Part 3

04 November, 2021

Yesterday we read that Jesus is our brother. Let’s continue from where we stopped yesterday.

Actually Jesus is our older brother.

Jesus the Son of God, came to earth as a human being and adapted our nature and called us brothers.

The book of Romans says that we are the children of God and we are the chosen ones!

We are co-heirs along with Jesus.

Hebrews 2:14-18

14 Since the children have flesh and blood,he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God,and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Now imagine there is a family and the oldest is a son.

What the son does is his duty in the father’s place, the younger siblings see the oldest like their father. This is exactly how Jesus is for us, an older brother.

The book of John says “flesh gives birth to flesh and spirit gives birth to spirit”

When we say God is our father that means that we are born of his spirit, he is our spiritual father.

When we live in the flesh the world is very different. The way we see it or the way we live is completely different. We are trapped in the body, we are human beings so our world is very much different.

Like soldiers who are ready to go to a war and are afraid but waiting for death, God liberates us from sadness and death.

Romans 5:12

Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ

12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned

Because everyone has sinned we all die. Death has got entry through sin.

Because Jesus came in flesh he had to die. The devil many times tried to kill Jesus,

John 8:44

44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

The devil is the father of lies.

Since the beginning of sin the person behind these wrong acts is the devil.

John 10:17-18

17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

Jesus said that nobody is taking his life but he is laying it down.

He gave his life for our  sake, for he loved us.

There are many instances in the Bible where the devil tried to kill Jesus, he even tried to make Jesus commit suicide but Jesus instead laid down his life for us.

What we can understand by this is that the death of Jesus became the defeat of the devil.

In the Old Testament satan was the controller of death but as you come to the New Testament you will see how God has the keys of death in his hands!

Jesus died and took the keys of death from the devil.

We notice that something that all humans dread is death.

Jesus has delivered humans from death.

Many people are afraid of death.

What they fear most is that what will happen to their bodies after death. Some people are afraid of getting bedridden.

In Hebrews we read that Jesus is our faithful high priest. As an elder brother Jesus has done many things and showed us how life on earth must be like.

He shows us the right path to take in our lives. It is difficult for us to understand at one reading but if you ask Jesus to speak to you.

He will help you as your older brother and show you what the right path is.
