Romans 10:8-10 ‘But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”[a] that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.’
What does ‘the word is near you’ mean?
In those days, the Gospel was spread by word of mouth. The printing system was not invented back then and instead there were scribes who used to copy down each and every single word without omitting anything onto scrolls. These scribes were a particular class of people who were well educated.
And because of this not every house had the scrolls.
The system that was followed then was the ear-to-heart system. People heard the word of God and believed it in their heart. Just like Mary heard the words that came from the mouth of the angel and believed it in her heart.
Coming to the next part of the verse – ‘If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.’
These are the criterias for your salvation.
If you believe and accept Jesus as your Lord, saviour, master, author of your life, then you are saved.
When you say you are saved or born again, what does that mean?
It means that you have a master, a shepherd, a saviour. And that God shed his blood as a ransom for your sins.
Now, the confession can be done in two ways:
Confession of merely saying Lord, Lord.
Confession of the Lord with doing the will of the Lord.
And the people who enter the kingdom of God are the ones that follow the second type of confession.
Matthew 7:21-23 ‘ “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
Believing and accepting that Jesus is your Lord and proclaiming it is done by a person who is filled with the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:3 ‘Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.’
Acts 2:21 ‘And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
