Jesus never blatantly declared that He is God and people should worship him, but he did so decently, elegantly and in a dignified way through his works and words.
John 14:11 “Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.”
Here, Jesus asks us to believe the evidence of His works, that no one else on earth could do! There are some of His works that can be done by us, but there are some that no one in the history of the earth has done or could ever do.
Matthew 11:3 “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
It was John the Baptist who came before Jesus to prepare the way. Once Jesus started ministering, John the Baptist was imprisoned. At this time, John sent his disciples to ask Jesus if He was the Messiah or whether they should expect someone else. This was heartbreaking, as John was the one who had prepared the way for Jesus, heard the voice from heaven, saw the dove coming and announced to the whole world and to the coming generations that He was the lamb of God who would carry the sins of people. John the Baptist was a very powerful minister, however even he doubted the deity of Jesus, maybe because he had different expectations of how the Messiah would act or behave. All the people of Israel who followed the Old Testament expected the Messiah to restore the Kingdom which was at that time occupied by the Romans. They expected the Messiah to be the King and be seated on the throne of David and they would have a golden era of Messiah’s rule.
Jesus responded to this question:
Matthew 11:4-6 “Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.””
Jesus asked them to look at his works and decide for themselves! It was his works that confirmed his deity! His works would prove that He was the one who was to come as Messiah.
John 15:24 “If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.”
Jesus did things that no one else did or be able to so that we would believe in Him.
Some of the things only Jesus could do :
These are things that only God can do! A mere prophet, religious leader, priest etc could not do such works.
Therefore, it was the works of Jesus that prove that He is God.
Lastly, Jesus’ death on the cross was not a murder or an accident or a natural death. It was a substitutionary death. This means, He died in our place, taking up all of our sins, sicknesses, punishment, poverty and curses. He took up our death! He took up all the negative things from us. No one else could do this for us. Jesus’ work on the cross was unique. Nobody could do it or imitate it. God sent His Son to the Calvary to spare us. We don’t have to go to the Cross again. No court will punish a sin twice. Jesus has already taken that death sentence. We do not need to go to hell nor do we need to be guilty.
