The Rich Man And Poor Man

10 July, 2021

Today we will take a portion of the scriptures and look in to this more closely

Luke 16:19-31

19There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.

20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores

21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.

23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.

24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family,

28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’

Here we see a rich man and Jesus. The man was living in luxury and dressed royally. The above is not a parable, it is a real story because in a parable names are most often not mentioned. Here names are mentioned e.g Lazarus. In order to clarify your perspective we should understand that God gives everything to us depending on our capability to manage the assets  that he gives  while here on earth. For example  land, car, home property etc. He knows how well we can handle everything  according to our talents so we all should understand that none of us are owners of anything on earth but God has given and blessed us with it so as to enjoy them while on earth as God has prepared the best in heaven for us in later life.

1 Timothy 6:17

“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.”

Psalms 24 :1

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;”

It is clearly seen that earth and its fullness belong to God. The time came when the beggar died. Similarly, we all will have to leave this world sooner or later so we should never get attached  to these worldly possessions and give that more priority to God. Here Abraham’s bosom is a  reference to paradise.

Everyone who is not born again or not living according to the scriptures, who have not submitted fully to Lord Jesus will be put into a place of torment before the actual judgement and later into hell. Hell has only entry no exit, once you are in it you cannot escape. Many people have misconceptions about being rich and poor here on earth and their position in heaven or hell . They think since the rich enjoyed everything while on earth they will go to hell and because the poor suffered here on earth they will go to hell.

Jesus never judges according to the status of people while here on earth based on the material possessions whether rich or poor but he looks into the heart and anyone who shares and helps are his children. You should never give more value to materialistic possessions like money than God. Jesus  loves everyone who loves others and not money .
