The Double Edged Sword Hebrews Chapter 4: Part 1

12 November, 2021

The four kinds of rest given in Hebrews 4.1-11

God rested on the 7th day after creation: It means work is done. It shows our present day salvation. Jesus finished the work on the cross and today we rest in salvation

The Israelites after 40 years of wilderness reached the Promised Land and settled there. It shows the inheritance we have in Christ.

The Believer’s present rest in Christ. We see this in verse 3 and 10 and it shows the rst from the work of the Law. Jesus fulfilled the Law

The Overcomer’s present rest in victory. The Israelites had to fight the inhabitants in the land of Canaan. Similarly, we have to continue to fight against lust, worldly pleasures etc.

The future eternal rest in Heaven.

Galatians 2.16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

Through faith in Christ, a believer is free from the chains of Law.

Ephesians 2.8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith —and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

In the Old testament, during Moses’ time, a man was convicted of breaking sabbath rest and sentenced to death. The same happens to a person who now goes back to the Law. God has given us a rest in Christ. We cannot earn our salvation by works, only by faith in Christ. Jesus healed people on Sabbath. But Jesus is Lord of Sabbath. He was born under the Law, fulfilled the Law and freed us from Law.

No religion can give us “Rest” nor can we get “Rest” by obeying the Law. Philosophies, Atheism and the like can also not give us ‘Rest’. Rest is a person. Rest comes from Jesus.

Matthew 11.28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

He is the only rest giver. A Christless life is a restless life and a life with Christ is a restful life.

Hebrews 4. 12,13 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

From the topic of rest, the Author deviates to the living and powerful Word. This Word gave rest to the people. They should have mixed the Word with faith. The Word is compared with a double edged sword with a sharp point which is used to pierce. It can cut away all the unwanted things in our life. In John 15.2, Jesus says that “every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” During Moses’ time, his wife Zipporah “took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and cast it at Moses’ feet, and said, “Surely you are a husband of blood to me!” So He let him go. Then she said, “You are a husband of blood!”—because of the circumcision.” (Exodus 4.24-26)

The word which is sharp on both sides cuts off the unwanted from the one who speaks and the one who hears. We see in Acts 2. 37, when the people heard Peter’s sermon, “they were cut to the heart”. Here 3000 people heard the word and their foreskins were cut, they were circumcised by the Word : they repented and were saved , baptised and added to the church. It was the word that acted as a sword that did this and it is still happening. This is the power of the Word of God; it is living and brings people everywhere to repent by cutting off the world from them. The Word is also a lamp to our feet , a fire that consumes the unwanted and refines us, a hammer that breaks hard rocky hearts, water that washes us and cleanses us (Ephesisns 5.26), pure milk for spiritual babies and meat for the mature when they receive more revelations.

The Word is living: There is life in it. In John 6.63, Jesus says “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”

It is powerful

It is sharper than a double edged sword. This shows sharpness, precision, accuracy etc. The Word of God can enter people’s hearts and has the power to work according to each person’s situation.

The speaker and hearer get a cut by the Word.

It is difficult to make a division of the soul and spirit, but the Word of God discerns the two.

Joints and marrow show the flesh. Psalm 107.20 says “he sent His Word and healed them”

Normally people are judged by their works in a human court. But the Word of God judges man’s thoughts. If you read the Bible, the Bible will read you. The Word will expose our shortcomings and the intents of our hearts.

We do not fear any man as there is only person to whom we have to give account to and that is God. Nothing is hidden from him. (He 4.13)
