What should people do with their money?
In Jesus’ teachings on earth, He has spoken immensely (about 20 %) about how we should handle our wealth which means he gave great importance to it.
In Luke 12:16-21, Jesus tells us a parable about a rich man whose land reaped a great harvest. There was no space to keep his harvest so he decided to build a bigger barn to store the surplus grain. He planned on resting after that as he has all the extra grain to live off of for a long time. He wanted to “Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”
This man was so greedy and as it says in Proverbs 11.26 People curse the one who hoards grain,
What would we do if we were in a situation of immense new wealth? We all have the greed of getting more and more things for ourselves. The greed factor is different for each person.
God then tells the rich man, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
What should the rich man have done instead?
Verse 21: “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” This man did not think about the spiritual. While earthly possessions are essentials, our priority should be to be rich in spiritual terms! He did not become rich spiritually.
1 Timothy 6:9-10 “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
The greedy desire to be rich will land us in destruction! Our desire should instead be to be blessed by God, and God’s blessings come in all forms- both materially, socially and most importantly, spiritually. All blessings belong to our father and we must share it with others. It is “THE BLESSING” from our Father God. Our desire should never be for worldly wealth and honour.
Proverbs 10:22 “The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, without painful toil for it.”
Our love of money should be replaced by the love of God!
1 Timothy 6:17 “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.”
Money is uncertain like the rest of earthly things, but God is unchanging and He is our provider in whom our trust should be. The ups and downs of the economy does not affect a blessed person because God’s blessings are a spiritual force and are certain. It is a power working in us. Money is not a blessing. We must put our hope in God only.
1 Timothy 6:18,19 “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”
This is what we should do with our wealth! We must be a ‘Good manager’ of God’s money.
We cannot serve both God and money at the same time. Our love and priority should be for God and spiritual things. As we rely on Him and serve Him, He will provide every need and we will store up a treasure for eternity.
