The Past, Present and Future of our Salvation

21 July, 2019

‘The right knowledge about the truth will set you free’.  If you have a strong fellowship with the Christ, you will be emboldened to face your trials.

The general phrase is ‘I am saved’; but there is more to that phrase. Being saved is just the beginning of our salvation where our spirit is born again with the Spirit of Christ. So the past salvation is for our old spirit that gets renewed by God. In the present, our salvation is being worked out on our soul that is being saved and the future salvation is when we are resurrected with Christ and our mortal bodies too are fully saved.

Let’s examine the process of salvation in the 3 tenses used in the Bible to further understand this:

Past: I have been saved from the penalty of sin. Here we are saved when our spirit is reborn with Christ by the grace of God.

Present: I’m being saved from the power of sin in my life. The Holy Spirit works on our soul i.e., mind, emotions and freewill. Here we require faith to overcome the power of sin.

Future: I will be saved even from the presence of sin when my body is resurrected at the second coming of Christ.

The basis of my past salvation was because of the faithful love of God. That is, God loving us even while we were sinners. At present I walk by faith and not by sight and I have a living hope for my future.

Let’s see what the bible says about our salvation with respect to the tenses to further our understanding:

All of us used to live in the way of the flesh, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. But God is so rich in mercy, and He loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)

Ephesians 2:3-5 NLT from this we understand three amazing characters of God:

Love: God loved us without expecting anything in return.

Mercy: God’s mercy withholds what we deserve i.e., the judgment and eternal penalty for all our sins.

Grace: God’s grace is a whole new ball game.  It bestows upon us what we don’t deserve – like our salvation, the Holy Spirit or everything good we ever have.

God saved us by His grace when we believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT.

This gift of God is given to us because of His grace and we can avail of it and make it personal by our faith. Salvation is not something to be earned but a gift to be received. However we do need humility and faith to receive it. We also need to keep walking in faith all our life by being diligent with all Godly matters (like being water baptized, praying, fasting, meditating on the word, faithful obedience to God’s will, etc.) to remain in the path of salvation.

There are only two categories for people in this world.

  1. Those who are being saved.
  2. Those who are perishing.

Where do you want to be placed? Our Father has a loving heart that has already seen us in the saved version, so let’s not be disheartened when we slip but keep on moving forward in His strength.

“This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armour of right living. Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.” Romans 13:11-14 NLT
