Names and Titles of Jesus – Part 14

26 April, 2021

The knowledge of Jesus Christ is the foundation of Christian life. This made Apostle Paul passionate to know more about Jesus Christ. This made him a strong believer.

  1. Shepherd and Overseer

Psalm 23.1 says “ The Lord is my Shepherd”. This Lord who came to earth in human form is Jesus who is our Shepherd. The common name for Shepherd in church circles is ‘Pastor’, hence Jesus is our Pastor. Overseer also is the person who oversees people

1 Peter 2.25 For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

We have a Shepherd and an Overseer who oversees our life. As a Shepherd he always oversees and provides for all the needs of his sheep. He guides his sheep and takes measures to protect the sheep from wolves and other animals. In the same way, if the Lord Jesus is our Shepherd, we can be assured that He is always supervising over us , overseeing and looking into all the minute details of our life even as He guides us. Even before we pray, he knows our every need. The more we grow in this relationship with our Shepherd, we too can say like David said, “The Lord (Jesus) is my Shepherd, I shall not want”. That means he becomes our wonderful supplier

  1. True Light

John 1.9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

John, the Apostle introduces Jesus as the ‘True Light’ that came into a world that was covered with darkness where people were crying out for light. This TRUE Light (not false) shone into the people in darkness and today this same ‘True Light’ lightens our lives too.

  1. True Vine

John 15.1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

This is one of the seven “I AM” statements of Jesus. When He states that He is the ‘TRUE VINE’, it also means that many false vines including wild ones also existed in the world. Jesus is the Vine, His Father is the Gardener and we are the branches. Branches are a part of the Vine, Jesus and are united with Him. A branch which does not abide in the True Vine cannot bear true fruit. A branch is completely attached to the Vine. We understand from this analogy that we have to nestle against His bosom and be completely united with Him. John 15 clearly states that the branches connected to the Vine will go through a painful pruning process by which all the unwanted growths etc are taken away in order that we bear much fruit. God will use this refining and purifying process so that the nourishment from the Vine will be beneficial to yield more fruit.

  1. True Witness

Revelation 3.14 To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.

The title ‘True Witness’ here is given to Jesus Christ. There are many witnesses in this world. The Mosaic Law specifies that to confirm anothing , there must be two or more witnesses. Jesus alone is the True Witness among many false witnesses in this world. He knows everything that has happened in human history. Even in our lives when the good things we do go unappreciated; Jesus, the “True Witness” who is both omnipresent and omniscient knows all. Sometimes even though we speak the truth, no one including our family believes us. But one day, when everything is exposed, Jesus who knows all the hidden secrets of our hearts will be our true witness.

  1. Truth

John 1.14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 14.6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

We see in many verses in the Bible that Jesus Christ is the Truth. Every truth comes from him and is in Him.

  1. Way

John 14.6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

He is not someone who shows the way but He Himself is the Way. He carries you in the Way.

  1. Wonderful

Isaiah 9.6And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”

His name is wonderful. Isaiah gave us messianic prophecies on the coming of Jesus and one of the names given for him is ‘Wonderful’. If we need a miracle, he will give us one because He is Wonderful. If our life is connected to this person who is called ‘Wonderful’, our life becomes wonderful.

  1. Wonderful Counsellor

Isaiah 9.6 And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

In some translations, He is called ‘Wonderful Counsellor’ and rightly so as He is Wonderful and a Counsellor too.

  1. Word Of God

Rev 19.13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

It is clearly mentioned that His name is Word Of God. He is the Spokesman of the Trinity.

  1. Word Of Life

1 John 1.1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—

He is known as Word Of Life because there is life in His Word. If He speaks words to us, it brings life to us.
