Moses & Jesus: Part 3

17 September, 2021

Nationalities : Exodus 2 and Matthew 1, Luke 3, Romans 1 tells us that the nationality of both Jesus and Moses were the same! They were both Israelites i.e. they were born Jewish.

Births :Both of their births were also during a time of being under the hostile power of gentile kingdoms; Romans and Egyptians

Moses at the time of his birth was described as divinely beautiful. Stephen describes Moses in detail in Acts 7:20 and we also read about him in Hebrews 11. Even at Jesus’ birth in the manger, his beauty brought the angels down to earth.

In Stephen’s last speech, he compares Moses and Jesus.

Infancy :Their infancy was also similar. The Kings that reigned then, threatened their lives; by Herod and by Pharoah.

Exodus 1:22 “Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.””

Matthew 2:16 “When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.”

It was not that these kings knew that these children were significant. When the devil sees that a child will be used by God for His Kingdom, he attacks them from birth! It was the devil who prompted the Kings to kill the babies.

In the same way, when some people get saved and start their born again life, the devil tries to destroy that as well.

However, whatever the enemy plans for evil, God turns for the good of those who love Him. The same Nile river that was meant to be the death of Hebrew sons (judgement), became the channel for Moses’ safety. It became a river of salvation for Him.

Adoption: When Moses was born, his parents kept him hidden and safe for three months before sending him across the Nile river. It must have taken great courage to hide him as they would have been closely monitored by Pharaoh’s people from the time of the mother’s pregnancy. It was after this that the Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him. Even Jesus was born as Mary’s son; not Joseph’s. Joseph adopted Jesus. Pharaoh’s daughter was not married, so Moses also had no father. Both Moses and Jesus had virgin mothers and they were both adopted children!

Childhood: They both spent their childhood in Egypt.

Matthew 2:13 “When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.””

Hosea 11:1 “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.”

Sympathy for Israel: Both of them had sympathy for Israelites:

Acts 7: 23 “Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel.24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck down the Egyptian.

Even Jesus had great sympathy / compassion for his people and that is why he came down, leaving everything, to free the enslaved.

Luke 4.17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”

Both of them had a transition where they wanted to free their people from oppression.

Early recognition of Life’s mission: Both of them realised their duty and calling from childhood. They knew that God had a purpose for them. We read about Moses in Acts 7:23 “Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel.

Jesus, even though started his ministry at the age of 30 , knew when he was 12 as he sat at the temple that he was meant to sit and learn the things of God as he had a mission to accomplish later in life. Luke 2.49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”
