Today we are continuing our comparisons between Jesus and Joseph. There are many and we can say that Joseph is one character that has many similarities with Jesus that can be elaborately studied.
In Genesis 41 a famine came and people from all around called upon the name of Joseph as his name had the power and authority and all came before him. God gave him this position of lordship. The same happened to Jesus on the day of Pentecost as mentioned in Peter 2: 36 Lordship was declared to Jesus Christ.
Peter 2: 36
“Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified”
In Genesis 41:45
“Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-Paneah and gave him Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife. And Joseph went throughout the land of Egypt.”
Joseph was given a new name by Pharoah. Jesus was also given a name above all names.
“Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from Pharaoh’s presence and traveled throughout Egypt”
Joseph was 30 years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh.
“Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli”
Jesus was also the same age when he was baptized and started his public ministry.
“During the seven years of abundance the land produced plentifully. 48 Joseph collected all the food produced in those seven years of abundance in Egypt and stored it in the cities. In each city he put the food grown in the fields surrounding it. 49 Joseph stored up huge quantities of grain, like the sand of the sea;it was so much that he stopped keeping records because it was beyond measure.”
Immediately after Joseph was raised to a high position there was seven years of a season of plenty where a lot of supplies of food and agriculture was there. This was followed by seven years of famine.
Jesus also after he was resurrected there after it is a season of plenty and harvest. We all are in that season. It is called the time of the gentiles.
“I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited:
Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in”
“Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds”
Then again 7 years of famine will come; it will be called the time of Jacob’s trouble.
“Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble, but he shall be saved out of it.”
“And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.”
During this period there will be less saved souls and very less spread of God’s word.
Joseph was seen as a food distributor or supplier. He provided food to all the starving people. Jesus too fed spiritual food to all. He also multiplied food as in bread and fed thousands.
In this generation we all have a role to do, to provide food to all. The spiritual food to all peoples to know Jesus and become a chain to spread the word.
Joseph ordered his servants to give elaborate feasts to his brothers. Jesus also did the same. He fed multitudes.
Joseph gave seeds to his fellow brothers to cultivate and produce more food in time for the next harvest. Jesus also gave order to his disciplines to be the light and spread the Word of God all over the world.
“and the seven years of famine began,
just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all the other lands, but in the whole land of Egypt there was food.”
And all the world came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was severe everywhere.
Joseph’s role was to sustain all the lives of people of the world. He was a saviour. Jesus came to this world as a saviour for all mankind.
Joseph had unlimited resources. He had enough food for all the people of the world. Jesus has the glorious riches of God . Never will he be exhausted of any riches.
“Turn to me and be saved,
all you ends of the earth;
for I am God, and there is no other.”
We can clearly see both Jesus and Joseph had to go through so much struggles and troubles before they were raised and uplifted by God to their highest position. The life experiences seasoned them and made them who they are. We all have to go through many struggles and face many hard times before rising high. The depth of your past determines the height of your future.
