Joseph & Jesus Part 4

10 September, 2021

We’ve seen innocent people being punished in the Bible. Joseph lived a righteous life but he was punished for around 17 years and Jesus, who was spotless, was punished for the sins of the whole world!

Though Joseph was innocent, he was cast into prison. Genesis 39:20 “Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.”

It was the same situation with Jesus; though Pilate saw no fault in him, he was sentenced to death! John 19.6 But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”

Joseph was bound in chains (Genesis 39.20) and so was Jesus (Matthew 27:2). Innocent people have been chained in the Old Testament, in the New Testament and even today.

However, there is a higher court that is observing all that is happening here on earth and that judgement will come soon! Leo Tolstoy once said, “God sees the truth, but waits!” Many of us have been persecuted and punished due to no wrong of our own, but God sees our troubles.

Joseph suffered all things at the hands of the Gentiles, after being persecuted by his own Jewish brothers. It was the same for Jesus; He was first persecuted by the Jews and later on, by the Romans.

Psalm 105. 17,18 talks about Joseph’s sufferings 17 and he sent a man before them—Joseph, sold as a slave.18 They bruised his feet with shackles, his neck was put in irons,

Joseph was shown favour by his jailers; Genesis 39:21 “But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.”

Jesus too was recognised as the Son of God by the Roman centurion after his crucifixion and showed favour!

In Genesis 40, Joseph is put in a prison with two other prisoners, a butler and a baker; Jesus was crucified with two criminals. The two prisoners with Joseph saw two dreams which he interpreted for them. One of them would be restored by the Pharaoh and the other would be executed! One saw blessing and the other saw death. This was the same for the criminals with Jesus; one was saved and would be in Paradise with him and the other perished!

When Joseph interpreted the dreams, he became an important and prominent person but each time he interpreted the dreams, he gave all credits to God. Genesis 41.16I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”

Even when Jesus did signs and wonders, He always gave credits to His Father! He never boasted about being God. John 12:49 “For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.”

In Genesis 40:14 Joseph asks the butler to remember him when he goes back to the Pharaoh. Jesus too lifted up the cup of wine and asked us to do it in remembrance of Him.

In Chapter 41, we see that Joseph quickly rises from prisoner to ruler! This was the same that happened to Jesus; he rose from the grave to glory! Both changed their prisoner/ grave clothes to clothes of Glory.

Genesis 41:16 – Joseph was known as an interpreter or revealer of secrets! In the book of Revelation and throughout the Bible, we see that Jesus reveals many hidden things!

Genesis 41:33-36 – Joseph gives a warning about famine coming in the future throughout the land. Jesus has also warned us of the great judgement to come and has asked us to start preparing already by repenting!

Joseph was known as a Wonderful Counselor. The Pharaoh gave him complete decision-making authority! We see in Isaiah 9:6, Jesus is called “The Wonderful Counselor” and in Colossians 2:3 , “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

Both of them were filled with the Spirit of God.

Genesis 41:38 “So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?”

Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.”

What makes a person different from others is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Joseph and Jesus were different , so can we be.

When God raises a person, it will be glorious. In Genesis 41:39, the glory given to Joseph was magnificent! All of Egypt was under Joseph’s control! God also rose Jesus up to full glory and all knees will bow down to Jesus and every tongue will proclaim His name!

1 Peter 3:22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

Philippians 2:5-11Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Joseph was seated at the right hand of the Pharaoh and Jesus at the right hand of God!

Both Jesus and Joseph were taken to such low places but later on, raised to such great glory! It was because of their qualities and worth that God raised them.

In Genesis 41.42, we see the rank and position given to Joseph by Pharaoh ! Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his finger and put it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in robes of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck.

In Acts 5.31, Hebrews 2.9, Revelation 1.13 etc , we see the glory and position given to Jesus!
