Jesus is my Elder Brother Hebrews Chapter 2 – Part 3

03 November, 2021

In the earlier part of Hebrews 2, we learnt that Jesus tasted death for each one of us and restored us to the original authority and position which Adam had before his fall.

Hebrews 2:10-13 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying: “I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.” And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And again: “Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”

Just as God made the whole universe, He could redeem mankind effortlessly by His speaking the Word; but man lost his original authority, holiness and image due to sin and as per God’s logic, it was fitting that one person had to come in human form and go through the same trials, temptations and challenges, travel the same path ‘in perfection’ and overcome the power of sin. This is God’s sovereign scheme for salvation and redemption of mankind. God is God, and He has His way of doing things!

Isaiah 55:8,9 – “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.

God speaks to us by revelation. But people think so much and come up with wrong theories. Charles Darwin, who led a survey voyage on HMS Beagle around the world, lost his faith in God over his discoveries in the field of Evolution and later it was in his deathbed that he repented of his disbelief. Do not let your thoughts and walk of life drift you away from your faith in God. Be rooted in God, so that you can stand firm in every situation.

Real love is sacrificing love.

2 Samuel 24:24 – But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of silver for them.

The ultimate sacrifice of Jesus cost him His whole blood by which you and I have been saved! He expects the same from us i.e. to take up the cross and follow Him.

Matthew 16:24 – Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. That’s the basic qualification to be a disciple of Jesus.

Mark 8:35 – For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.

To love me, it cost Jesus His life

To love Jesus, it costs my life

Heaven wouldn’t have been our eternal home, if Jesus had not endured the Cross.

Jesus is the Captain of our Salvation, who’s always in the front to lead, to arrange things, to command, to set an example, to encourage and to reward us!

Why was Jesus, a perfect God and a perfect Man; made perfect through sufferings?

Jesus is a perfect God who took up the human form for us. He did not appear one fine day as a perfect man, but was born to Earth as a baby. And he grew as a child, a teenager, a youngster, just as we all humans do. He tasted human life, took our sins and burdens, went through the sufferings on our behalf and became our Captain, and now He’s bringing many sons to glory! We who believe in Jesus are being led to God’s glory and not to Hell, a place of torment!

Isaiah 53:10 Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

Jesus is not ashamed to call us brothers. Consider a multimillionaire who associates with a man who lives in a slum. The slum man would brag about it, but it would be discreditable for the millionaire. Similarly, it is an honour for man to say that he is Jesus’ friend, not for Jesus. But Jesus’ love for us is such that He is not ashamed to call us brothers – born in the same family!

Matthew 10:32,33 – “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.

Mark 3:34,35 – Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

John 20:17 – Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

Jesus addresses the disciples as His brothers. God’s only begotten Son came down to Earth and made His Father our Father too!

“In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.” Jesus sang a song of praise to the Father as he sat with his disciples whom He called ‘brothers’ on the Passover night before He set out to the garden of Gethsemane.

Isaiah 8:18 – Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.
