It Is Dangerous To Fall Away Hebrews Chapter 6: Part 2

19 November, 2021

Hebrews 6. 4-8 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. 7 For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God; 8 but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

This is one of the strongest or sharpest passages in the entire Bible. It is also very complex and controversial.

Four important points from this passage:

1. If you fall away : It is likened to a man who is caught in a current in an ocean and taken away by the waves and is not able to come back alive. It is a gloomy picture.

If you fall away after :

  1. Being enlightened : It indicates God’s light shining on us i.e receiving revelations
  2. Tasting the heavenly gift: This speaks about salvation Romans 6.23: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.   Ephesians 2.8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
  3. Becoming partakers of the Holy Spirit: It means fellowship with the Holy Spirit
  4. Tasting the good Word of God: Enjoying the goodness in the word of God.
  5. Tasting the powers of the age to come: who have tasted God’s supernatural power

2. Consequences if you fall away:

1.It is impossible to renew them again to repentance

2.They crucify again for themselves the Son Of God

3.They put him to an open shame

Now a question arises: Is it possible for a person who is saved, repented, heard the Word, received supernatural power and blessings of the Holy Spirit, if he falls away; to come back to repentance?

This verse says that it is impossible. But the parable of the prodigal son clearly states that it is possible for a Child Of God to come back to the House after he has sinned . In Revelation chapters 2 & 3, Jesus tells seven churches to “Repent and come back”. Now  to understand the context behind this verse in Hebrews 6. 4-8, we must know to whom this letter is addressed to. It was written to the Jews who had received the Law from God. They had left the Mosaic Law and come to Jesus. If after knowing Jesus, they went back to the Law and its traditions and rituals, they were crucifying Jesus again, who had fulfilled the Law. During this time, Emperor Nero had made the Jewish religion legal but not the christian churches. The Messianic Jews for fear of losing their properties, went back to the Jewish Synagogues and the Law of Moses by  publicly confessing  that Jesus was not the Son of God nor was He, the Messiah. It was an open shame to Jesus by saying that Jesus’ crucifixion had no benefit. It was the religious fanatics who had actually crucified Jesus. To go back to this religious fanaticism is to kill him again. The Author was warning them not to go back.

Proverbs 24.16 For a righteous man may fall seven times And rise again, But the wicked shall fall by calamity.

A righteous man, though he sins, can come back to repentance. ‘To fall’ and ‘To fall away’ are different. God gives each one of us many chances to come back. But when a person falls away from Christ and goes back to the old religion, he cannot come back only when he is not willing to repent.

John 15.5,6I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

Without Jesus, we can do nothing. It is the duty of a branch to remain in the Vine. If the branch does not do so, it is cast out and thrown into the fire.

3. If you yield good fruit after receiving so much showers of blessing from God, you will receive a blessing from Him

Hebrews 6. 7,8 7 For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God; 8 but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

4. If you produce evil fruit after receiving so much from God, you will be cursed and burnt in hell.

It is dangerous to fall away from Christ.
