How to treat the Holy Spirit

15 February, 2021

Many of us don’t know how to treat the Holy Spirit as He cannot be seen.

When Jesus was on earth, people could visibly see Him. But the Holy Spirit is invisible and that is a challenge. The Holy Spirit by nature, is easily hurt. So we need to deal with Him with great care and sensitivity. Whether the Holy Spirit is visible or not, it is the heart attitude that matters.

How was Jesus treated when He came into the world ?

Some people received him while others rejected him. For example, Mary yielded to the Angel’s message and received Jesus into her womb despite the challenges. Her marriage was not over and people could stone her to death for having a child before marriage. But still she surrendered herself and received the Saviour into her womb.

At the same time, two aged people, prophetess Anna (aged 84years) and Simeon were praying and fasting for the Messiah to come into the world. They were so happy to know about His birth and they rejoiced and prophesied over Him as he was brought to the Temple on the eighth day for circumcision.  When the Angelic Choir announced to the shepherds, they too were very happy. So also when the Magi (wise men) who came to see the king when they got some information. The Magi came in search of the King from far with costly gifts and worshipped Him even though the King was only a baby. When we seek God, He reveals Himself to us. All this time, King Herod was frightened of this birth and wanted to kill the baby. He presumed that this boy would be a threat to him. This is how Jesus was received by different people.

This is the way the Holy Spirit will be treated today. King Herod wanted to finish off Jesus. This is the same thing that Herod’s spirit is doing today. The moment a person is born again by receiving Jesus into his heart, the Devil wants to finish off Jesus in him. Somehow the devil will tempt that person to backslide or deny Jesus or go back to his old ways. Even today people question and criticise the works of the Holy Spirit like the Pharisees and Sadducees questioned Jesus. The High Priests and other religious people were jealous of Jesus. They wanted to kill Jesus as they thought the people were going after Him. The Sanhedrin (Supreme Court) also opposed Jesus . They had the Scriptures which gave information on Jesus’ coming. Although they knew everything, they rejected Jesus. On the other hand, the common people received Jesus. Others like Nicodemus ( a member of the Sanhedrin) and rich people like Zaccheaus received and treated Jesus well.

The way people treated Jesus is how we treat the Holy Spirit today.

The wrong ways to treat the Holy Spirit:

  • Not receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 2:14 ” The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”

There are so many things that we can receive from the Holy Spirit. He gives us gifts of the Holy Spirit, the revelation of the Word etc. everything in Heaven is transported from Heaven by the Holy Spirit. But the natural man doesn’t receive anything from the Holy Spirit. Not receiving his gifts and blessings is a wrong way to treat the Spirit.
