Believe Today! Hebrews Chapter 3 (Part 2)

08 November, 2021

Hebrews 3:7-11 says, ‘7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:“Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness, 9 where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did. 10 That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’ 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”

When you hear his voice “today”, do not harden your hearts. Many people are compelled by the devil to postpone the things of prayer and worship for tomorrow. To postpone to tomorrow what is to be done today is Pharaoh’s way. So “Believe Today”! Those who postpone things of prayer and worship for the next day, will never actually get around to doing them.

Hence, if you hear the Lord’s voice today, do not harden your heart as in the rebellion during the trial in the wilderness. Do not test the Lord like your ancestors who constantly tested the Lord in the 40 years in the wilderness. Everything was provided to the people of Israel, where they witnessed daily miracles from the Lord. Food and clothing were provided to them according to their needs. There never came a time or a need for the Israelites to want for new clothes or shoes as they grew to fit them in every season with the sole of their slippers never wearing off for years. Despite seeing these miracles everyday, they tested God and therefore greatly angered the Lord. They constantly chose wayward ways. They were never close to God.

David fell from the will of the Lord several times. But the Lord still loved him as David’s heart was stuck to the Lord’s heart. Despite falling off, he kept coming back to the Lord.

The verse ‘…They shall never enter my rest.’, means that the Isralietles will never enter Cannan. The word “rest” is used 14 times in this letter. This was a promise the Lord made in his anger. They experienced miraculous water, food, clothing and shoes, but never entered the promised land, due to their wayward ways and their hardened heart.

A sign of a hardened heart is indifference, where there is no emotion or feeling when hearing about the Lord. The next sign of a hardened heart is unbelief. Another sign of a hardened heart is the want for more signs and miracles. Hence BELIEVE TODAY!

2 Corinthians 6:2 says, ‘For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.”I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.’

There is no guarantee of tomorrow. There is an urgency in the word “now”.Hence listen to the word today, read the Bible today and be saved today, because we have no guarantee of tomorrow. We see this in the parable of the rich fool who stored riches for himself in Luke 12.13-21, “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

In Hebrews 3:7-11 we saw a mention of the wilderness. Now, what happened in the wilderness?

Numbers 20:1-13 says, ‘In the first month the whole Israelite community arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried. 2 Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron. 3 They quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the Lord! 4 Why did you bring the Lord’s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here? 5 Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!” 6 Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them.7 The Lord said to Moses, 8 “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.” 9 So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence, just as he commanded him. 10 He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. 12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.” 13 These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the Lord and where he was proved holy among them.’

During their time in the wilderness the Israelites constantly complained and whined about their circumstances. Despite the Lord showering miracles after miracles over them, they failed to believe in the Lord and bickered amongst themselves. Then the Lord told Moses to command the rocks and the water would pour out. Instead he was angered by the Israelites and struck the rock twice with his staff. Moses’ disobedience and the Israelites’ complaining heart, greatly angered the Lord. This resulted in them not entering the promised land by the Lord. So do not harden your heart.

The question remains, if once a person is saved, will they lose their salvation?

The answer is they will and they will not. There is security of salvation, but at the same time it is not. The truth is salvation will follow you if you don’t turn back from the Lord and sustain your relationship with him till the end.

In Numbers 13 and 14 also, the Israelites rebelled against God.

1 Samuel 15: 23 says, ‘For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”

In essence, the Lord had planned a rest for the Israelites after their journey in the wilderness. However, they complained and bickered against the Lord and carried in them a rebellious heart, they did not enter the promised land. In the same way, the Lord has promised us a place of rest in our lives. But if you do not believe in this promise TODAY, you will never enter that state.
