This Can Be Your Story - Part 27
Joseph is an eminent character of whom the Bible says nothing about his flaws, others being Samuel and Daniel; not that they were sinless, but that their sin was so negligible and wasn’t a hindrance for God’s move in their lives. Joseph had several character qualities in him - glorifying God in everything, forgiving, living a consecrated life, faithful in all that was entrusted to him, etc.
We’re now in the third phase of Joseph’s life where he became an exalted ruler. God has set a day of exaltation for each of His children who’ve surrendered their lives wholly to Jesus.
We are called by God to inherit a blessing (1 Peter 3.9), and we need both faith and faithfulness to climb higher in life. Be faithful in the least, with sincerity of heart, to your masters not just when their eye is on you, but at all times because God is constantly watching you.
God exalted Joseph and had him settle in life and also brought Jacob and his entire family from Canaan and had them settle in the region of Goshen in Egypt. Jacob, being a man of God and one who had encounters with God, had the spiritual authority to bless Pharaoh, and Jacob was 130 years old when he was brought to Pharaoh’s presence.
Genesis 47:12
Joseph also provided his father and brothers and all his father’s household with food for their families.
This shows Joseph’s character quality of being magnanimous and adding sweetness to the lives of those who made his life bitter. He could have put his brothers in prison for the wrongs they did to him.
Genesis 47:13-14
There was no food, however, in all that region, because the famine was so severe; the lands of Egypt and Canaan had been exhausted by the famine. Joseph collected all the money to be found in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan in exchange for the grain they were buying, and he brought it into Pharaoh’s palace.
Joseph had authority, but he never abused his authority and power; instead he remained faithful to Pharaoh and brought all the money he collected in exchange for the grain to Pharaoh’s palace.
Genesis 47:15-17
When the money from the lands of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? For our funds have run out!” “Then bring me your livestock,” said Joseph. “Since the money is gone, I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock.” So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their flocks and herds, and their donkeys. Throughout that year he provided them with food in exchange for all their livestock.
Genesis 47:18-22
When that year was over, they came to him the second year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord that our money is gone and all our livestock belongs to you. There is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. Why should we perish before your eyes—we and our land as well? Purchase us and our land in exchange for food. Then we, along with our land, will be slaves to Pharaoh. Give us seed that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.” So Joseph acquired for Pharaoh all the land in Egypt; the Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields because the famine was so severe upon them. The land became Pharaoh’s, and Joseph reduced the people to servitude from one end of Egypt to the other. However, he did not acquire the priests’ portion of the land, for it had been given to them by Pharaoh. They ate the rations that Pharaoh supplied; so they did not sell their land.
Joseph in his wisdom generated huge revenue for Pharaoh during the famine. During recession/famine, those who invest well with godly wisdom like Joseph did will become prosperous.
Genesis 47:23-26
Then Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have acquired you and your land for Pharaoh this day, here is seed for you to sow in the land. At harvest time, you are to give a fifth of it to Pharaoh, and four-fifths will be yours as seed for the field and food for yourselves and your households and children.” “You have saved our lives,” they said. “We have found favour in our lord’s eyes, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.” So Joseph established a law that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh, and it is in effect in the land of Egypt to this day. Only the priests’ land does not belong to Pharaoh.
Genesis 47:27
Now the Israelites settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and became fruitful and increased greatly in number.
It happened just as God spoke to Israel in a dream that He would make him into a great nation in Egypt. The members of Jacob’s family who went to Egypt, including Joseph and his two sons were seventy in all. But when the Lord brought them out of Egypt under the leadership of Moses, they’d grown to 30 lakhs in number over a period of about 400 years. The Israelites themselves had become a nation within the land of Egypt, and as generations passed, the next Pharaohs who didn’t know Joseph and his service to the land of Egypt treated them as slaves, all of which is recorded in the book of Exodus.
Genesis 47:28-31
And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, and the length of his life was 147 years. When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favour in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise to show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt, but when I lie down with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me with them.” Joseph answered, “I will do as you have requested.” “Swear to me,” Jacob said. So Joseph swore to him, and Israel bowed in worship at the head of his bed.
God had told Jacob in the vision at Beersheba that Joseph's own hands will close his eyes and that He would bring him back. The same is stated in Acts 7 by Stephen who knew the history of the forefathers.
Acts 7:9-16
“Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace. “Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food. When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our forefathers on their first visit. On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was, and Pharaoh learned about Joseph’s family. After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family, seventy-five in all. Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died. Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money.
God will rescue you too from all your troubles. Cling to God and when you journey with God throughout your life, God will exalt you and make you a display of His glory; and your life will become a history that generations will remember, preach about and sing about!
